Kamikaze Serving Marin since 1990

They also wanted a name that everyone could remember. In the research for a name they came up with Kamikaze. It was a popular drink at the time and has great meaning. The name Kamikaze which many associate with the Kamikaze fighter pilots actually goes way back to Genghis Khan. In the year of 1281 Genghis Khan was embattled with the Mongolian army and just when Khan's army thought they were going to be defeated a typhoon came and wiped out most of the Mongolian army. Khan's army believed the gods had save them and they called the storm Kamikaze. Kami means "divine" and Kaze means "wind". This was a very befitting name for their restaurant because Gene and his friends were very young at the time and put everything they had into building this restaurant and make their dream become a reality.

Kamikaze has changed over the years, in 1993 Tony Chan and Tu sold a their interest in Kamikaze to Gene Su and then server Tina Chan. The neon money river is now covered with carpet and Kamikaze no longer closes at 2:00 am in the morning. The menu offers the largest variety of sushi and sashimi in the bay area. With the popularity of Japanese food we are able to bring in more items from Japan like a large variety of sake and other seasonings. Chef Gene Su has trained many sushi chefs who have all gone on to open their own restaurants throughout California.

Somethings however will never change. Kamikaze still offers fresh sushi, sukiyaki and great tempura. The Dragon Roll which Chef Gene Su created for his wife long before Kamikaze was ever opened is still the house signature roll. Over the years many restaurants have tried to copy it, but they fail by skimping on the ingredients. You still will find Chef Gene Su behind the sushi bar serving you up with a great smile and Tina Chan will take care of you at your table or the sushi bar and for the regulars she always remembers your favorites and is more than happy to beat you drinking Sake Bombs.

We invite you to come to Kamikaze Sushi Bar & Japanese restaurant to see why it has been a mainstay in San Rafael since 1990 and will become your favorite go to sushi bar too.
